Kashmir holds multiple beautiful options for trekking. Known for its serenity and poise, Tarsar Marsar is arguably the prettiest trek in the Kashmir region. The trek, which stretches over 47 km, magnificently switches landscapes from the boulders-strewn stretches, snow-fed lakes, sparkling rivers, mighty mountains, vast valleys, scenic meadows, flower sections, and heaven-like peaceful arena. The Tarsar Lake or Tar Sar is an almond-shaped alpine lake situated in Aru, Jammu, and Kashmir and separated by 4000 ft by Marsar Lake, popularly known as the twin sister of Tarsar lake for its similar nature. The elusive Marsar lake is almost always hidden under a shroud of clouds that waft their way through the U-shaped valley to settle above the lake finally.
The vast and lush green grassland makes this place alluring. Mud houses and shepherds’ flocks on the trail make the entire experience out worldly. Here is a brief itinerary of the Tarsar Marsar trek with Plan the Unplanned:
Passengers travelling to Jammu & Kashmir are mandatorily required to be in possession of RT-PCR negative report of not older than 72Hours from an ICMR accredited lab or a COVID vaccination Final Certificate (two doses complete). RT-PCR timeline starts from the swab collection time
Passengers not in possession of negative RT-PCR report or vaccination certificate shall be required to undergo test upon arrival free of cost.
How is the Trek organised?
For the proper organization of Kashmir and Himalayan treks, Plan the Unplanned team is associated with a local experienced team that’s registered with Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department.
Moreover, we have been working with them for many years. Their highly skilled staff, professional local guides and trek leaders are the reasons for our continuing partnership with them. The team shall manage all operations starting from Srinagar. Only when we have over 8 bookings from Bangalore, do we send our leaders from Bangalore.
Note: To properly utilize resources, a batch from PTU is clubbed with trekkers who originally book with the local team. This is how all trekking organizations manage their treks. An exclusive PTU batch is only formed when we have a majority of bookings ( over 8 and above ) from our end.
To sum it up, you are in good hands. We are here to answer all your queries. We form a WhatsApp group when the batch is exclusively from PTU. Nevertheless, all necessary information is communicated to you personally over Whatsapp and emails.
We begin our journey to Aru Valley from Srinagar. Trek Leaders will give a brief of the whole trip. Srinagar lies at the height of 5200 ft and Aru at 8000 ft from sea level. It’s almost a 3.5 hours journey. On the way, we will see the famous Lidder and Jhelum river. To your surprise, we would even get to touch and walk side by side to the Lidder river when we trek, but for now, get a glimpse of the pristine waters and save your excitement for the other day.
Furthermore, day 1 is for acclimatization; hence, walk around, enjoy the weather, click pictures, and gear up for the next day before drifting to sleep.
Freshen up and get ready for a healthy breakfast which will pump you up for the entire day. From Aru, we start to Lidderwat(altitude – 9000 ft) for a camping experience. It’s a moderate trek with mild ascent and descent leading to a beautiful camping meadow. The total time taken would be around 7 hours. You will see heaven all around you on reaching the camping location, and this is just the beginning. On one side, you will have the Lidder River, and from the other side, the Kolahoi glacier flows down to meet the river. ‘Lidder’ + ‘wat’, meaning ‘Lidder Mixture’ make up the word Lidderwat.
Enjoy the pure silence, sound of water, and refreshing views, combined with a crisp cup of tea and Maggi. Then enjoy and share stories of your travel while calmly drifting into the night.
From Lidderwat, we start to Shekwas, which is at 11039 ft. Again, the trek is moderate. It’s a gradual ascent for about 2 hours with few flat trails. Stop midway whenever you feel like absorbing the essence of Bakerwal shelters, meadows, water streams, pine forests, etc. Consequently, the wooden bridges will surely rave up your excitement and will make you crave for more. En route, you will find many nomad huts, shepherds, flocks of sheep. Stop at some location for a tea/coffee break.
Get ready to ascend to 12500 ft to surrender to the views of Tarsar lake, an almond-shaped alpine lake. It is a 4 hours gradual climb, but you will see Kolahai peaks overlooking the lake after this. Cross a stream full of boulders and rocks, which will open up to the vast open area and views of turquoise blue waters of the Tarsar lake.
Upon reaching, build a camp and reflect on the beauty of nature. You are open to exploring as you wish.
Wake up to the panorama – a classic dream come true. Then, get ready to go to Sundersar, which is at the height of 12900 ft. It will take around 5 hours for the whole hike.
Finally, as you cross the Tarsar pass, you will see a vast stretch of grassland that leads to Sundersar. The trek would soon lead you to the Sundersar lake, equally clean and reflecting the views of the surroundings.
This day will start with an ascent to Marsar and then a descent to Homwas at 11500 ft. Marsar, which is at the height of 13200 ft, is the highest point of our whole trek.
The trail is tricky with some gradients. The Marsar lake is similar to Tarsar lake; hence, it is also called the twin sister of Tarsar. The Marsar lake connects with Dachigam National Park and outlets its water into the Dal lake. Needless to say, the complete trail is laden with beautiful pristine views.
Then, we descend and stay overnight at Homwas.
This is the last day of our trek. From Homwas, we descend from Aru via Lidderwat. So, if you somehow missed some views, collect them here. Then, we will go back to Srinagar and have an overnight stay here before parting our ways.
This is the end of 7 days of fun, drama, and an insane trek. In these seven days, we are sure that you will not only make friends, enjoy your time in the wild, but also challenge your endurance and strength for the future. While you will be going back by bidding each other goodbyes, you will also feel cramps in your whole body, but fret not, for you have covered one of the least covered and most sought out treks in Jammu and Kashmir. Take memories home and smile!
Plan the Unplanned team is always happy to see you again – Check out our other itineraries and call us soon. We will wait for your message. Till then, take care and rejoice.
The interesting thing about traveling alone is that you get to meet new people from diverse backgrounds, and towards the end you are no longer strangers. Hence solo travelers are always welcome to join us on our trips. Read more about solo travelling here and get inspired! https://www.plantheunplanned.com/solo-yet-accompanied/
Safety and security is our priority at all times. Hence it is absolutely safe for women/girls to join us on our treks and travels. Our trek leaders accompany the team at all times, and our campsites are secured and safe for accomodation. We also have female trek leaders who accompany on most of our treks.
Usually, we take maximum of 15-18 people in one group. We believe bigger groups have less fun and less coordination so that’s why we prefer smaller groups.
We need at least 4 people to operate our fixed departure tours/treks.

The Tarsar-marsar trek was wonderful. The camp sites at Lidderwat, by the side of Tarsar and Sundersar gave stunning views of the lake.
