Looking for your next trek destination? Pack your bags and leave overnight to an altitude of 2,725 feet above sea level, camping amidst the lush rainforests of Agumbe in Shimoga, Karnataka.
Located at a distance of 380 km from Bangalore, Agumbe is a high altitude village in the Malnad region of Karnataka and is often referred to as “The Cherrapunji of the South” because of its scenic beauty and biodiversity. It also comprises of many medicinal plants and is home to the only Rainforest Research Station in India. Surrounded by the majestic mountains of the Western Ghats, covered in depths of lowland rainforests and touched by beautiful waterfalls and streams, Agumbe is the perfect place for a trek.
Start your journey through a trail of forest to immerse yourself in the beauty of a waterfall, warm your hands over the campfire, travel to the era of Malgudi days and drink in the spectacular view from one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats.

Agumbe rainforest camping is an experience which will be very native and simple to give you a feel of the village life. Agumbe is surrounded by the Western Ghats and lush rainforests also often called the Cherrapunji of South India. We expect the travellers to leave behind their comfort zones and enroll only if you are ready to experience the outdoors without any major hassles and complain with regards to our arrangements. We will take care of all the basic necessities and arrange everything that is possible. Camping in the forest is not allowed due to safety aspects and permits but we shall be camping in an open ground surrounded by nature which is in close proximity to the homestay.
We will be reaching Agumbe approximately at 6:00 AM and head over to the homestay where you can freshen up and get ready for the day ahead of us. After indulging in the specialty breakfast native to Agumbe we start our day.
Our first stop would be Kavaledurga fort, a 9th-century fort that offers a spectacular view from the top. It is a trek of about 6 km (to and fro) and is considered as an easy trek. After spending some time on top, we will head back down to the base to have our packed lunch by a scenic lake.
Just an hour away from this place lies the river of Bhimankatte where you can go refresh yourself in the cold water at a spot which is not known to many! After you have finished having your fun and are all dried up, we head over to watch the world-famous Agumbe Sunset. The sunset point in Agumbe is a must-visit place for every traveler as the view of the sunset and the changing colors of the sky will definitely soothe your soul.
Once the sunsets, we shall head back over to the homestay, freshen up and have a light snack. Our camps are set up a little further away from the homestay and a bonfire is lit (depending on weather conditions). Have a delicious dinner and retire for the night.
Agumbe rainforest trek was my first with plantheunplanned group.the experience was superb as they organized it beautifully.Special thanks to Steffi and Abhijit as they not only followed the itinerary fully but also kept things smooth .I’ve never travelled with them before but i felt as if I’m traveling with them for real long time ,such was the environment.Ive been to Agumbe before but missed the sunrise and sunset but this time because of them only I’ve got good clicks which I’ll share later.overall the experience was really amazing and looking forward to travel with them again for sure.

Yess , And to cover this all these places in a proper way and time , we had 2 of best trek leads @Abhiram and @Nagashri.They supported and took care of us very well! ?

Agumbe Trek : A Beautiful place and a Wonderful Trek with PTU to Agumbe.. My second Trek with them and it was absolutely worth everything.. Kavale Durga Fort Trek and Kundadri were at its Best.. I’m not very fond of waterfalls since its mostly crowded.. but Katina Madke Waterfalls which we went to on the first day had just PTU people around and so liked that aswell.. Trek leads were friendly and the local guide was this lil innocent boy, Abhi, whom I spoke to the most. ( I’m glad that he tolerated me and answered all the silly questions asked 😉 ) And food, have to mention about this, loved ಕೇೂಟೇ ಕಡುಬು, the local food out there which was served for breakfast.. Also a surprise awaits you on the second day, lemme not mention that here.. (you’ll absolutely love this!) Overall, a must visit place with PTU.. More to come 🙂
